Hujambo and Happy New Year Everybody. (Hujambo= Swahili for hello) As we begin this "Black History Month", I would like to challenge all of my followers to do better and be better. Let us strive to exemplify the virtue and leadership of a true America. I challenge each and every one of you to take time out to learn a new history fact facilitated by a Black American and then teach that information to at least one other person. No race of people should have their Historical contributions relegated to just 28 days, however, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a distinguished Black author, editor, publisher, and historian, recognized the need for such recognition. Originally referred to as Black History Week. Dr. Woodson selected February to encompass the birthdays of two great Americans who played a prominent role in shaping Black history, namely Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglass, whos birthdays are the 12th and the 14th, respectively. And to my Good Brothers of Iota Phi Theta, Pick up your Bow and grab your Shield, we have work to do this month. Ow Ow!!!!! The brutal slaying of George Floyd, has lead to a spiritual awaking of the Black consciousness.
The last couple years have ushered in an affinity to "buy Black", and this affinity has led to the creation of many local businesses. Coupled with the availability to reach more people via, internet and online stores, many entrepreneurs have enjoyed the sudden surge of pride that has lead to a more than usual stream of customers. Why A Black out day? It is estimated that minorities spend over a trillion dollars annually. A trillion dollars is enough to bring any minority community to power or at least give them a set at the table. Or it could if that money was spend in the minority community. All too often, the bulk to that trillions of dollars is being spent in other communities and those communities do not, or will not invest that same money back into the minority community that it came from. For example, I've never see Gucci or any other name brand company use the millions of dollars that is earned from the Black dollar to reinvest in majority minority neighborhoods. Another example is the banks, convenience stores, and liquor stores that are all littered throughout many Black neighborhoods, who do not support, spend money in or help to advance the very neighborhoods who patronize and keep them in business. Most disappointing of those are the banks. These banks take in millions of dollars annually from Black churches and Black business, but make it near impossible to get a small business or low interest loan to help that community but I digress. Why A Black out day? Because it is needed. Many great successes has come from financial boycotts. Although is it only for one day, today 7 July 2020. I hope that the desired income has an effect. I hope that it show the power of the Black dollar and garner respect for the people has been respected the lease. I hope that this one day of recognition will surge Black businesses who have been struggling under that weight of the COVID-19 and social distancing. Below are places that you can go to find Black business, to patronize and support. Additionally, you can find other business in the useful links section of this web site. Just click the picture to be linked to the site. “A race that is solely dependent upon another for its economic existence sooner or later dies” Marcus Garvey Now more than ever it our responsibility to be the commanders of our own economic fate. Supporting non-melanated banks have been the norm and will not change in the near future. Humans by default are creatures of habit, however, we do posses the ability to add to our currently situation. With that being said, I feel that we have an obligation to support the banking institutions that are in and support our communities. A few ways to support: 1. Open an account for your children and explain the importance or supporting Black financial institutions. 2. Open and additional account for yourself and family. Get to know the people at these local Banks. 3. If you own a business transfer your business accounts to a Black owned institution. 4. Tell a friend who don’t have a bank account and encourage them to open an account. 5. Close your current accounts at other institutions and transfer that money to a Black own Bank or credit union. 6. Encourage your church, lodge, fraternity, sorority, or any organization that you may be a part of to open an account at one of these institutions Like I said before, I understand that change is hard and where our money is concerned, the uncertainty makes reconfiguring your normal way of doing things that much more difficult. We become use to the commercial banking institutions, they have large advertising machines, and have been a well-known comfort since we were old enough to open our first account. However, I would like to say this, all of the well known and commercial institutions had to start somewhere. Many of the Banks and Credit Unions listed have been around for years and even decades. Most of these institutions have a storied history of serving a need in our communities when there were no other options. So, I say to you, Support those who support you. Support the Banks and Credit unions in your neighborhood. Support your family and yourself, by supporting them. There are already over 35 African-American owned banks and credit unions in the United States where you can put your money if you find these type of efforts for financial stability and reinvestment in the Black community important.

*Sourced from watchedtheyard.com Commemorated Annually on June 19th, Junetheenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the U.S. The emancipation proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Sep 22, 1862, announced "That on the 1st day of January, A.D. 1863, All persons held as slaves within any state... in rebellion against the U.S. shall be the, thenceforward abd forever free." However, it would take the civil war and passage of the 13th Amendment to the consitution to end the brutal institution of African American Slavery.
After the Civil war ended in April 1865 most slaves in Texas were still unaware of their freedom. This began to change when union troops arrived in Galveston. Maj Gen. Gordon Granger, commanding officer, district of Texas, from his headquarters in the Osterman building (Strand and 22nd st.), Read 'General Order No. 3' on June 19, 1865. The order stated "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a proclamation from the executive of the United States, all slave are free. This involves and absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves." with this notice, reconstruction era Texas began. Freed African American observed "Emancipation Day", as it was first known, as early as 1866 in Galveston. As community gatherings grew across Texas, celebrations included parades, prayer, singing, and reading of the proclamation. In the mid-20th century, community celebrations gave way to the more private commemorations. A re-emergence of public observance help Juneteenth become a state holiday in 1979. Initially observed in Texas, this landmar event's legacy is evident today by worldwide commemorations that celebrate freedom and the triumph of the human spirit. Note: this information was found online from an unknown source so credit cannot be given. Twenty Five years ago Minister Louis Farrakhan put out a clarion call to the Black men of America. Unheard of at the time, Minister Farrakhan wanted One Million Men to gather around the National Mall in Washington DC. to protest, be enlighteded and receive a way forward for Black Americans. More than one million men and women of all colors, mostly Black but all races and creeds participated in this historic event.
Given the state of America something drastic is needed to nail home the protest and pin into place the awareness and recognition that Black Lives Matter. On June 14th, 2020. There will be another Million Man March held in Columbia SC. I for one will be there dressed to the nines with a Black fist raised ready to answer the call, make history, make a change in America While nonviolent people and citizens peacefully protest the violent and unncessary death of George Floyd. There are "Others" who do not want peace, they do not want African Americans to peacefully fight for their rights.
"Others" are destroying property and are directly responsible for causing anarchy. The attached video shows one such action. A white man, in mask and gloves, is caught on camera smashing the windows of a local business. The thug was then confonted by two black men only to walk away. The other pictures shows a white man in the crowd of protestors with what appears to be a ear peice, similar to those worn by law enforcement. What could they possibly be doing in the middle of a peaceful protest if not to cause trouble and disrupt the peaceful protest of a thug cop taking of a human life. We do not control the narrative, it seems to be in the hands of, potentially, members of the police who want to cause disruptions and violence in the community. The ills of America has once again reared its ugly head.
For Months, Decades, Centuries, White America has had a problem with it's black inhabitants. There will come a time, when the good citizens of these United States will say enough is enough. The unncessary death of these young Black Americans is a travesty and should not go unanswered. The perpetrators of these horrendous acts must be punish and justice administered. Rest In Power to the victims of American Racism and injustice. #justiceforBreonnaTaylor #justiceforAhmaudArbery #justiceforGeorgeFloyd |
